Question 1

How is Avalon different from other tutoring centers?

Accepted Answer

We build each plan around your child instead of moving every student through one program. Math and Reading sessions are taught by certified teachers, groups are capped at 4 students, and we switch between IXL, hands-on tools, and books based on what works for your child.

Question 2

How do I know which program is right for my child?

Accepted Answer

Every new student starts with a free diagnostic assessment. We'll evaluate your child's strengths and target areas, then recommend the program and format (one to one or small group) that best fits their needs and goals. The diagnostic shows whether your child's skills are at or above grade level. If they are at or above grade level and you want them to get ahead and stay ahead, the Half Session is built for that. If they are closing a gap, One Session or Two Sessions is the right fit. One thing worth knowing: the diagnostic measures skills, but a student can still struggle in class because of differences in school curriculum, test anxiety, or other reasons. We can help with that too — share what your child is currently working on in school (assignments, unit topics, recent tests) so we know exactly how to help. There's no obligation — just honest guidance.

Question 3

What ages and grade levels do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Our programs are tailored to each age group with age-appropriate materials, teaching methods, and session structures.

Question 4

How long is each tutoring session?

Accepted Answer

Instructor sessions are 30 minutes on the Half Session plan, or 60 minutes. One Session gives you 1 hour of instruction a week, taken as one 60-minute session or two 30-minute sessions. Two Sessions gives you 2 hours a week, mixed however you like — 2×60, 4×30, or 1×60 plus 2×30. Every Homework Club day is 1 hour, and it can be on the same day as your session for one visit, or on a different day. Sessions are small group, up to 4 students with an instructor at any time.

Question 5

Is there a long-term commitment or contract?

Accepted Answer

No enrollment contract. New students start with an initial three-month enrollment — a window for starting, quarterly re-assessment, and monthly progress reports to produce a measurable result. After the first three months, enrollment continues month to month, and you can cancel with 30 days notice. Full terms are in the Terms and Conditions you accept at enrollment.

Question 6

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Accepted Answer

You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your session at no charge. Late cancellations may incur a $25 fee. We understand life happens — just give us as much notice as you can.

Question 7

Do you offer a satisfaction guarantee?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. If you are not completely satisfied with your first session, it is free. We are confident your child will love learning with us.

Question 8

How do you decide what my child works on?

Accepted Answer

We decide from data, not guesswork. Every student starts with a free IXL diagnostic that maps their actual skill level. From there we set a clear skill plan targeting the specific gaps — and we adjust it continuously as your child masters each skill. What your child works on next is always based on what the assessment shows, so no time is wasted on content they already know.

Question 9

What if my child learns differently?

Accepted Answer

That's exactly what we're built for. Every student learns at their own pace and through their own learning style — some need things shown visually, some need to talk it through, some need to move. We discover how your child learns best during the diagnostic, then adapt every session to it. Groups are never more than 4 students with an instructor at any time, grouped by ability, not by one approach.

Question 10

What if my child is struggling or anxious about a subject?

Accepted Answer

We listen first. Anxiety about a subject is real, and rushing to fix it rarely helps. Your instructor will hear your child out and meet them where they are. When a child is particularly anxious, although we listen, it's often better for them to start 1 to 1 with an instructor — and we'll suggest that they receive 1 to 1 for perhaps a few months, until the student is comfortable being around other students. We keep building confidence with small wins, and we stay in close communication with you throughout.

Question 11

How do small group sessions work?

Accepted Answer

We never have more than 4 students with an instructor at any time. Some students join for 30 minutes and others for the full hour, and groups are formed by skill level. They learn collaboratively while still receiving individual attention. It is a great option for building teamwork skills and learning from peers.

Question 12

Why would I choose a plan instead of private 1 to 1 tutoring?

Accepted Answer

Plans include the systems that drive progress: a starting free diagnostic, a personalized learning plan, quarterly re-assessment, monthly progress reports, the same instructor each week, and Homework Club days. Private 1 to 1 tutoring is a supplement for a targeted need, such as test preparation, a unit your child is stuck on, or a course outside our regular subjects. It is available to enrolled families and scheduled around a student's existing sessions. It is not a substitute for a plan.

Question 13

What subjects do you cover?

Accepted Answer

Our core programs are Mathematics and Reading & Language Arts. Additional programs — including STEM Enrichment, Homework Help, Enrichment & Acceleration, and ACT/SAT Prep — are coming soon.

Question 14

How do you track progress?

Accepted Answer

We treat progress as a shared conversation between you, your child, and their instructor. Every student on a monthly plan receives a clear written progress report — skills mastered, current levels, and recommendations — and you have your own IXL login to watch growth in real time. If you're ever wondering how it's going, your instructor is always available to talk. That open loop is what makes successful outcomes possible.
