Every student starts with IXL's Real-Time Diagnostic, which adapts question by question to map your child's actual grade-level ability in each math strand. This isn't a pass/fail test — it profiles exactly which skills are solid and which have gaps, sometimes revealing surprises parents didn't expect (a 7th grader strong in geometry but stuck at 4th-grade-level fractions, for example).

Every session is built around your child's specific needs. Here are the strands and skills each grade band typically covers.

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Building the foundation

Strands: Counting and cardinality, number names up to 120, place value to 1,000, addition and subtraction within 100, introduction to word problems, measurement with standard units, telling time, counting money, basic geometry (shapes and their attributes).

Common failure point: Rushing past counting strategies into memorization. Kids who never develop strong number sense — understanding that 8 is 3 + 5, 10 − 2, 4 × 2 — hit a wall by 3rd grade when multi-step operations begin.

How we target it: Sessions emphasize hands-on and visual strategies — ten-frames, number lines, manipulatives — before abstract notation. We make sure counting, composing, and decomposing numbers feel effortless before introducing speed.

3rd – 5th Grade

Multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals

Strands: Multiplication and division facts and multi-digit operations, fraction equivalence and ordering, adding/subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, decimal place value to thousandths, area and perimeter, volume, coordinate graphing in quadrant I, multi-step word problems.

Common failure point: Fractions. This is the topic where the largest number of students fall behind — and it shows up aggressively on the 3rd-5th grade STAAR. Students who never develop a concrete understanding of what a fraction represents carry that gap straight into algebra.

How we target it: We teach fractions as numbers with a place on the number line, not as mysterious pies. Fraction bars, area models, and the IXL fraction strand are used together until comparing 3/7 to 5/8 feels as natural as comparing 45 to 62.

6th – 8th Grade

Pre-algebra and the gateway to high school math

Strands: Ratios and proportional reasoning, integer operations (negatives), one- and two-step equations, inequalities, linear relationships, surface area and volume, probability, intro to statistics (mean, median, mode, box plots), transformations on the coordinate plane.

Common failure point: Negatives and multi-step equations. For the first time, students work with numbers below zero and operations that require multiple inverses. This is also when students who never mastered fractions or decimals hit a ceiling — you need both to solve an equation like 2/3x + 0.5 = 4.

How we target it: We slow this stage down intentionally. Integer operations get extra reps with number-line visualization. Equation-solving is broken into a repeatable sequence students can lean on. We don't introduce the next topic until the current SmartScore says ready.

9th – 12th Grade

High school courses and STAAR EOC prep

Each course runs as its own focused track. Students typically meet 2× per week with additional sessions available before exams or EOC dates.

Algebra I

Linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, polynomials and factoring, quadratic functions, exponential functions, STAAR Algebra I EOC preparation.

Geometry

Logic and proof-writing, triangle congruence and similarity, right-triangle trigonometry, circles (arcs, chords, sectors), coordinate geometry, surface area and volume, STAAR Geometry EOC where applicable.

Algebra II

Complex numbers, polynomial functions and graphs, rational expressions, logarithmic and exponential functions, sequences and series, probability and statistics, introduction to trigonometry.

Pre-Calculus

Trigonometric functions and identities, vectors, polar coordinates, limits, continuity, function analysis — the bridge to calculus readiness.

Statistics

Data collection and experimental design, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, interpreting data displays — practical stats for college and real life.

Common failure point: Algebra I EOC. This is the highest-stakes math test most Texas students face. Students who passed the course but failed the EOC are our most common 9th-10th grade referral.

How we target it: IXL's TEKS-aligned Algebra I skill plan maps directly to EOC standards. We combine skill-by-skill mastery with full-length practice tests under timed conditions. For students who've already taken the EOC once and not passed, we use their score report to target only the reporting categories where points were lost.

How we measure — and share — your child's progress

Monthly reports

Every month you receive a written summary: skills mastered, current SmartScores on in-progress skills, hours spent per strand, and growth since the diagnostic baseline. No jargon — just clear data you can act on.

SmartScore explained

A SmartScore is IXL's 0-100 measure of proficiency on one skill, not a percentage of questions right. It accounts for question difficulty, consistency, and recency. 90+ means mastery — your child can reliably answer that type of problem correctly, even on a bad day. 80-89 is proficient but not yet automatic. Below 80 means more practice needed.

Re-diagnostics

We re-run the IXL diagnostic every 8-12 weeks. The new results are placed directly beside the baseline — you see the growth in actual grade-level movement, not just a tutor's opinion. This also refreshes the skill plan so we're always working on what's current, not what was current three months ago.

Texas Standards

STAAR, TEKS, and where Texas math really stands

We don't guess at what your child needs. Every IXL skill plan is mapped to the TEKS by name, and we know the Texas testing landscape at each grade band.

Why math tutoring, specifically

Statewide, math is the weak spot. Grades 3–8 STAAR math and Algebra I both remain below pre-pandemic levels, and only slightly more than half of Texas students met grade level on Algebra I in 2026. Behind every statistic is a student who lost ground on fractions or linear equations and never caught up. Our program exists to close those gaps before they compound — with a plan that targets the specific skills your child is missing, not a generic review.

K–2Building the foundation before testing starts

K–2 has no state math test. Districts screen for foundational numeracy instead — Wylie ISD and others in the area use instruments that flag students who need support — and HB 2 (2025) introduced foundational numeracy screeners for K–3, encouraged but not yet required for 2026–27. Our K–2 work is all about building the foundation before testing enters the picture: number sense, place value, addition and subtraction fluency, and early problem-solving. Students who leave 2nd grade solid on these skills walk into 3rd grade STAAR ready, not rattled.

3–8STAAR math, every year

Grades 3–8 take STAAR math annually. Since 2023, a failing score no longer triggers automatic retention — but it does trigger mandatory school-assigned tutoring. Many families — including from Wylie ISD — use that option, then come to us when they see the difference between a district program designed for compliance and a tutoring center designed for mastery. Our small groups (max 4:1) and 1 to 1 sessions mean your child gets the direct instruction and immediate feedback that a crowded remedial classroom can't provide.

Coming change: STAAR is replaced by the Student Success Tool in 2027–28, shifting to beginning-, middle-, and end-of-year assessments for grades 3–8. Our continuous IXL progress monitoring — diagnostic baselines, monthly reports, and re-diagnostics every 8–12 weeks — already matches that rhythm. We'll have years of data on your child's growth pattern before the new system asks for it.

9–12Algebra I EOC — a graduation requirement

Algebra I is one of five STAAR End-of-Course exams a student must pass — "Approaches Grade Level" or above — to graduate. It is offered fall, spring, and summer with unlimited retakes, and a qualifying SAT or ACT math score can substitute. Students who take Algebra I in 8th grade sit the EOC in 8th grade, so for many families the Algebra I stakes arrive earlier than expected.

We make Algebra I the anchor of our 9–12 math work. IXL's TEKS-aligned Algebra I skill plan maps directly to every assessed standard, and we combine skill-by-skill remediation with timed full-length practice tests. For students who've already taken the EOC once and not passed, we use their score report to target only the reporting categories where points were lost.

Geometry and Algebra II EOCs are also prep options for students on those tracks — same approach, same TEKS-aligned skill plans, same focus on understanding over memorization.

SAT & ACT Math

For high school students preparing for college entrance exams, IXL's SAT/ACT-aligned skill plans cover Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math (SAT), plus the full ACT math sections. Strategy instruction — pacing, question triage, calculator use — is built into every session. And since Algebra I EOC is tied to graduation, a qualifying SAT or ACT math score can serve as a substitute for the EOC requirement.

Questions parents ask us

How often should my child attend math tutoring?
Most students come twice a week, and each session is 1 hour. Students preparing for the Algebra I EOC or STAAR often add a third weekly session in the 4-6 weeks before the test. Consistency matters more than frequency — one session a week for three months beats three sessions in one week before a test.
What does an IXL SmartScore actually mean?
A SmartScore is a 0-100 measure of proficiency on a specific skill. It's not a simple percentage of questions right — IXL weights consistency, question difficulty, and recency. A SmartScore of 90+ means your child truly knows the material and can apply it reliably, not just that they guessed well on a few problems. We target 90+ before moving on from any skill.
My child failed the Algebra I EOC. What now?
First, don't panic — this is common and fixable. We start with a diagnostic to identify which reporting categories cost the most points, then build a targeted skill plan using IXL's TEKS-aligned Algebra I strand. We combine skill-by-skill remediation with timed full-length practice tests. Most students are ready to retest within 6-12 weeks of consistent sessions.
How is this different from a math learning center franchise?
Two main differences. First, we use IXL as our core platform, which means every session is data-driven — your child works on exactly the skills they need, not a one‑size‑fits‑all workbook. Second, we cap groups at 4 students, not 6 or 8. The tutor actually has time to sit with your child during each session.
Do you give homework between sessions?
Yes — but it's IXL practice on the specific skills covered that session, usually 15–20 minutes' worth. The platform provides immediate feedback (right/wrong with explanations), so your child isn't practicing incorrectly all week. We can see whether they completed it and how they did before the next session.
Can you help my child with their school homework?
A portion of each session can be used for homework support, and our Homework Club plan is built specifically for that purpose. But for students in One Session or Two Sessions plans, the focus is our IXL skill plan — those sessions are about closing gaps and building mastery, not just getting through tonight's worksheet. The two often overlap, but our priority is long-term understanding.
Where are you located, and do you serve families outside Wylie?
We're at 201 Hooper Rd., Suite 100 in Wylie, Texas, and families regularly drive to us from Sachse, Murphy, Parker, and Plano. Most find the trip is 15-20 minutes and well worth the quality of instruction. All sessions are in person — we don't offer virtual or hybrid options, and the in-person attention is the point.
What if my child is ahead and needs enrichment, not remediation?
The diagnostic catches that too. If your child is performing above grade level, the IXL skill plan adjusts upward — we don't hold them to their enrolled grade. For acceleration, we move into the next grade level's skills at their pace. Several of our students work 1-2 grade levels ahead in math while attending their regular school grade for everything else.
